Cigarettes, How I Know I Can Quit… Electronic Cigarette?
Today I’m going to tell you a story. It is a tale of danger and possible painful death. It is the tale of my 48 year flirtation with disease and doom. I am a smoker of cigarettes. That’s right. For over forty eight years now I have been risking my health and my life by smoking cigarettes.
I started smoking at 12, standing on the toilet in my bathroom and blowing the smoke into the vent just below the ceiling. This worked well for a while until the man living up stairs thought he had a fire and called the fire department. Boy, I tell you, my parents were mad at me when they found out I smoked cigarettes. However, this didn’t stop me from smoking cigarettes. I just went into the back stairs to smoke instead. It was easy to find places to hide and smoke cigarettes in a high rise apartment building.
Over the years, I continued to smoke cigarettes (years from anything like the electronic cigarette was coming to town!)
Now, with abandon until I reached my current 2 to 3 pack a day habit. Now I will admit that since I spend a great deal of my time on the computer, most of my cigarettes burn down in the ashtray so I am not really smoking as much as it seems. But, I am still paying $15 a day for cigarettes. If I lived in a place like New York City instead of Oklahoma, I’d be spending $40 a day for cigarettes or smokes. That would be an unbelievable $14,600 a year for the privilege of risking my health to lung cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure while exposing myself to 5000 toxic chemicals and 69 carcinogens.
Ok, so we know smoking is nuts. I have tried to quit cold turkey dozens of times and the longest I ever went without a cigarette was about 3 months. I just can’t seem to stop smoking. It was all looking pretty bleak until the other day when I was having dinner with a woman friend and she pulled out her electronic, smokeless cigarette. After she explained to me that it didn’t actually burn tobacco or anything else for that matter, I was intrigued and did some research on the electronic cigarette.
The concept is simple. Smokers are addicted to nicotine
That is why it is so hard to quit. The smokeless cigarette allows you to get small, measured doses of nicotine with each drag without any tobacco and without burning anything. No flame, no smell, no cancer causing chemicals. The electronic cigarette contains a small lithium ion battery that heats up the solution in the nicotine cartridge to create an inhalable water vapor that replaces the smoke from a tobacco cigarette. The user get a dose of nicotine to satisfy their cravings with every drag and can actually replace tobacco cigarettes with the electronic cigarette.
Even doctors are getting behind the smokeless cigarette as both a replacement for tobacco cigarettes and as a quit smoking device. Many experts feel it is a much safer way to get your nicotine and they also feel it is possibly the most effective way to quit smoking gradually. I myself have been using the electronic cigarette for 2 weeks now instead of smoking 3 packs a day of tobacco cigarettes and I am amazed how effective it has been. I am starting to be able to move around without being short of breath for the first time in years and I may actually have finally found a way to quit the tobacco habit. Only time will tell and I will be sure to keep you informed if I smoke any more cigarettes.
